Impact Investing 101 2020
This year’s Impact Investing 101 was an online event hosted by MMI’s Sponsorship Director Anita Jiang, and our guest speaker Rachel Yang, the Investment Manager from the Venture Capital Division of Impact Investment Group (IIG). The interactive event provided a comprehensive introduction to the sphere of impact investing, and equipped the audience with an understanding of specific metrics and evaluation techniques used by IIG to evaluate the impact embedded in start-up business models. She delved deep into answering audience queries about how a social impact oriented start-up differs from a traditional start-up and addressed the misconception that social impact and high returns are mutually exclusive. It was also insightful to get to know Rachel’s personal story of her transition from a corporate career, to one where social impact is at the forefront. Her experience is incredibly relatable, especially to the average university student grappling with the uncertainty of career prospects, and emphasised the importance of pursuing work that you will ultimately value and find rewarding.
