Edition 15: What are you talking about?!

What does discourse look like in 2022, and how can we frame the discussion around social impact? Have we become too polarised to facilitate a productive conversation on taboo and topical issues, or are our ideas simply getting lost in translation? As the year is well and truly underway, what should we be talking about in 2022? So what are you talking about?! The 15th edition of the Impact Update aims to answer just that.

This edition also features a special guest piece from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE)

The Silent Satire

Remember the three little pigs. Did you laugh at the pigs losing their house, or the Big Bad Wolf getting thrown in a fire? The duality of satire has led everyone to love this classic fairytale but forget its message time and time again. Remember the three little pigs? It was about pointing out a corrupt judicial system. Satire is often used as a means of political discourse, but is it effective, or is it doing more harm than good?

Not Worlds Apart

Over six million people are displaced. Helpless people are falling victim to a ruthless oppressor, who seeks power and control over what is not theirs. Reading this may have led you to believe that this is the Russia-Ukraine conflict, but what if I told you that it is happening in a country most Americans can't even point to on a map? Afghanistan has once again fallen to the perils of the Taliban since the United States withdrawal, but will the West act? What are the teachings of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and what can it teach us about discourse?

Special Guest Piece: To what extent is Microfinance Ethical in Indigenous Communities?

What happens when Microfinance goes wrong? Deemed by many as a way to empower communities, others would instead be quick to point out its failings. But beyond that, we are missing a far more important question. Is it even ethical?

Are You(th) Listening?

Dr Monique Ryan shook the nation when she won the seat once held by Robert Menzies. Redistributions saw the electorate for the first time ever have more young people than old, and that had a clear impact on the outcome. The recent Federal Election illuminated the fact that young Australians are, contrary to popular belief, politically engaged. But what does this engagement look like, and how can the youth of today make their voice heard in the right ways?
